Ex-minister?s wife on hunger strike

Viki Stamati, the wife of former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos who has been in custody since last Friday after defending herself on money-laundering charges, on Tuesday entered the fourth day of a hunger strike in protest at her detention and was expected to make an official appeal for her release today.

According to her lawyers, the 49-year-old is determined to continue refusing food in protest at being separated from her 5-year-old son.

In her testimony before an investigating magistrate, Stamati insisted that she knew nothing about a series of offshore firms or apparently shady dealings regarding several properties including her home on the capital?s exclusive Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, noting that her husband made all decisions regarding their assets.

She added that she was not privy to information potentially incriminating Tsochatzopoulos, reportedly remarking, ?I am not my husband?s confessor.?
