Dogfight as Turkish jets enter Greek air space

TAGS: Defense, Turkey

Three Turkish aircraft violated Greek national air space in the northeastern and southeastern Aegean five times Monday afternoon with Greek and Turkish aircraft engaging in a dogfight.

The Turkish aircraft – two F16s and a helicopter – also violated the Athens Flight Information Region on two occasions.

The Turkish jets, which were armed, were chased away by Greek aircraft in line with international regulations, as was the helicopter.

Turkey has intensified its presence in the Aegean in recent weeks amid domestic upheaval and as Cyprus prepares to start offshore drilling for hydrocarbons in the summer.
