Blueprint for local entities to organize optimum operation and promotion of destinations

Tourism management plan

The Tourism Ministry this week presented the framework for the management of tourism destinations, known as Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO). It is aimed at promoting tourism spots, attracting visitors and developing a sustainable regional economy to the benefit of local communities.

Such a body is meant to have 10 main objectives:

* The DMMO should have the ability to bring together all stakeholders with a common goal of institutional improvement in marketing and management.

* It will take the tourism policy of the destination to be decided by the central government as a guideline in planning, decision-making and directing the economic and social development of the destination.

* It should invest in data collection tools, ensuring that all strategic decisions are informed.

* It will collect detailed knowledge of the characteristics and potential of the market, tourism products and experiences on which the qualitative development of the destination will be based, in cooperation with strategic partners and based on the tourism resources of the destination.

* It will ensure the integration of digital tools and systems into the business culture.

* It will oversee the implementation of the annual business plan that will be drawn up based on the broader strategic plan of the destination.

* It will develop crisis management strategies and tactics.

* Appropriate and ongoing training and capacity building will be provided to the employees of the destination management organization.

* It will be responsible for the creation, implementation and control of the strategic marketing plan that will result from the coordination of the tourism promotion of the destination in collaboration with other stakeholders.

* It will be responsible both for attracting investments to its destination and for stable financing, as well as functioning as a “sustainable tourism observatory” – i.e. a system of collecting, recording and analyzing data, based on the destination’s needs.
