Outrageous profiteering in Daniel’s wake

The inhabitants of the flooded areas of Thessaly are facing great price hikes, with many instances of profiteering.

The prices of horticultural products have shot up, and in many cases have doubled, against the backdrop of shortages.

“Today I bought tomatoes for 2.80 euros per kilo, almost double the price compared to a week earlier, before the floods. They said they were from Corinth. Cucumbers cost €0.85 each, while €1 used to get you three,” Nikos Papadopoulos, a resident of Larissa, told Kathimerini.

Papadopoulos talked about a general increase in the price of vegetables, while he saw a significant increase in other products as well: “In meat, for example, all types have increased by half a euro per kilo. On the other hand, in the cafes, which together with coffee give you a bottle of water for free, now they charge 50 cents for it,” he added.
