Greece slides down digital readiness list
According to the Digital Readiness Index, which reflects, among other parameters, how ready countries are to reap the benefits of technology and capitalize on the opportunities emerging from the digital revolution, Greece is the worst performer among European Union member-states.
A study by the Global Economic Forum presented by the Federation of Hellenic Information Technology & Communications Enterprises (SEPE), showed Greece ranking 70th among 139 countries, while a year ago it had been 66th among 143 countries surveyed. According to SEPE, Greece again scored 4.1 points in this year’s assessment, while other countries have improved their grades, rising above Greece, including Bulgaria, which for the first time has overtaken Greece to rise to 69th.
SEPE noted that this negative picture highlights the immediate need for the formation of an integrated digital strategy through which the country will be able to reverse its existing digital deficit, making full use of the possibilities offered through the digital transformation of the economy and society at large.
Greece has traditionally been a laggard at adopting innovation and reforms with the help of digital technology, and only in 2007 did it manage to climb to the 48th spot among 122 countries in the world.
