Man handed 2-year suspended jail sentence for attacking officer

A court in western Greece sentenced a man to two years and seven months in prison on Tuesday for hitting a police officer on the head with a chair outside a court house in the town of Pyrgos, in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula. The jail sentence was suspended.

The incident occurred when a group of Roma men gathered outside the court house on Monday attacked officers nearby after hearing that another Roma man would be detained pending trial over the robbery of a woman in the area of Kolireikes Parages.

The officer sustained moderate head injuries that required four stitches in hospital.

Authorities are still searching for two accomplices accused of attempting to release a prisoner, injuring an officer and causing damage to police vehicles.
