Mitsotakis: ‘Not a good night for New Democracy’

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis congratulated the newly elected local and regional officials in the runoff elections on Sunday which saw incumbents backed by the Conservatives lose to independent and opposition-backed officials in Athens and Thessaloniki, admitting that the results were negative for New Democracy.

“It was not a particularly good night for New Democracy,” he told the press. The political conclusions, however, as far as the distribution of the powers of the parties is concerned, essentially came out on the first Sunday.”

As for the political messages of the election, “the government must walk with its feet firmly on the ground,” he continued.

Mitsotakis pledged to cooperate closely with the local officials of the opposition. “I would like to assure them that it is the government’s duty to work with them as I said last Sunday…We expect a productive partnership with the elected mayors and regional governors.”
