Prosecutor to probe two civil servants with inflated bank deposits

A prosecutor in Athens will investigate two civil servants whose wealth declaration (so called “pothen esches”) showed large sums in their bank accounts that could not be justified by their official incomes.

The investigation was instigated following an audit by the National Transparency Authority (NTA). In one of the cases, the authority found 193,000 euros in the bank deposits of a ministry employee and his wife which did not correspond to their incomes, while the family had spent a total of 147,000 euros of unknown origin over five years.

The NTA also found 201,000 euros in the bank accounts of an employee of a local government organization and his wife.

The authority’s reports were forwarded to the employees’ disciplinary supervisor, the General Commissioner of the State at the Court of Audit that investigates unjustified wealth and the tax authority.
