Army disarms WWII bomb found in southern Athens

An army bomb disposal unit on Thursday neutralized a World War II 500lb bomb that was found in the southern Athenian suburb of Glyfada.

The army unit used thermite, a pyrotechnic composition of metal powder and metal oxide used, among others, to disable munitions without the use of explosive charges.

The unexploded bomb was found the day before during construction work at the old Elliniko airport, the site of a major property development project.

Poseidonos Avenue, a large section of which had been closed off to traffic for safety reasons since 9 a.m., was reopened shortly after 11 a.m.
