An Israeli company has investigated the possibility of prospecting for oil or natural gas south of Crete, Kathimerini has learned, while US Ambassador Daniel Smith has confirmed the interest of American firms in drilling for hydrocarbons off the coast of Crete and in the Ionian Sea.

Representatives of the Delek Group visited Greece in summer to investigate the possibility of setting up an oil rig south of Crete, Kathimerini can reveal. Unconfirmed reports suggest Delek officials returned to Greece this week.

Meanwhile the US ambassador in Athens has said that several American companies have expressed an interest in exploring for mineral fuels off the Greek coastline.
