Site sought in Attica for much-needed new jail
Authorities are examining various plots of state-owned land in Malakasa, north of Athens, and in Elefsina and Megara, both west of the capital, for the creation of much-needed new jails, according to a document signed by Deputy Justice Minister Giorgos Petalotis and submitted in Parliament on Tuesday.
In response to a question by conservative New Democracy MP Anastasios Nerantzis, Petalotis said the town plan for Athens foresees the creation of a new jail but does not specify a location.
Greece?s prison population stands at around 12,000 with most jails seriously overcrowded.
