Policeman suspected of being part of robbery ring gave tip-offs

A 44-year-ol police officer believed to have been a member of a criminal gang of ethnic Greeks from Kazakhstan thought to be behind a series of armed robberies and break-ins and detained for questioning Monday, is believed to have tipped off members of the ring on the movements of police officers in western Attica, helping them to evade arrest.

The suspect, who was based at the Menidi police precinct, is alleged to have obstructed a police investigation into cases of contraband cigarette smuggling that have been attributed to the racket and is also alleged to have been involved in the burglary of a jewelry store in Menidi.

Police have detained another six suspected ring members aged between 26 and 36, and are seeking two more men – a 32-year-old believed to be the group’s second in command and a 41-year-old.

A raid on the gang’s suspected hideout in Lagonissi turned up a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a Scorpion submachine gun.
