Former Thessaloniki mayor’s appeal to begin
An appeal by former Thessaloniki Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos against his life sentence for embezzlement is due to begin on Tuesday.
The Municipality of Thessaloniki has agreed to appoint two lawyers to represent it at the trial, in which it will be taking civil action against Papageorgopoulos.
The ex-mayor was found guilty in February of stealing almost 18 million euros from City Hall coffers.
He has maintained his innocence, though, and said that he will go to his appeal with a “clear conscience” and “unlimited faith” in the Greek justice system.
