MP’s proposal for Greece to tap into space tourism gets cool response

A proposal submitted in Parliament on Wednesday by Independent Greeks deputy Vassilis Kapernaros foresees the transformation of Kalamata International Airport into a rocket launch site in a bid to tap into space tourism.

The proposal for the creation of an “International Center for Space Tourism in Kalamata” prompted a less than encouraging response from the government.

Deputy Development Minister Notis Mitarakis noted that there had been no interest expressed to date in investing in Greece’s aerospace industry.

Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said that the proposed project would demand significant investments in infrastructure in the hundreds of millions of euros, adding that the operation of such a site would have to be approached with caution “in view of European and international regulations.”
