Youths run amok at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki

Two faculty guards were injured on Thursday when a group of around 70 youths dressed in black barged into a senate session at Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University and took academics hostage for several hours.

One guard was hospitalized after the youths charged into the room where senate members had been convening in the building housing the university’s administrative headquarters. The youths demanded their inclusion in the session, suggesting that they were students, who are not allowed to take part in such meetings. After four hours, the youths released their hostages and fled. The university’s deputy rector, Theodoros Laopoulos, notified a local prosecutor about the incident though there were no reports of any arrests.
