Guards have lost control of Greek prisons, says Panousis
Greek prisons are controlled by criminal rackets rather than prison staff, according to Citizens’ Protection Minister Yiannis Panousis.
Responding to a question on Monday regarding a deadly brawl at Korydallos Prison which resulted in the death of two Pakistani inmates on Sunday, Panousis said that an increase in the number of guards would help authorities to correct the situation.
His comments were echoed by Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos, who ordered a probe into the brawl, while noting that an “overpopulation of inmates” and staff shortages “multiplied tensions” at prisons.
Meanwhile, 15 of the 18 inmates injured on Sunday were discharged from hospital on Monday.
