ASSAILANT KILLED

Undercover police officer fatally injures armed robber after heist An armed man was shot dead by an undercover police officer at an Everest branch in Maroussi, northern Athens, yesterday after holding up the fast-food outlet with a partner. Authorities said that two undercover police officers were among the customers of an Everest outlet that was held up by two armed men. The officers followed the two assailants as they left the the premises with the store’s cash and called for them to stop. However, one of the two assailants is believed to have pulled a gun on the law enforcement officers, prompting one of the policemen to shoot him, fatally injuring him. The second assailant managed to escape, police added. EDUCATOR CAUGHT Ecstasy found on theology teacher A theology teacher on the Ionian island of Corfu was caught with 30 ecstasy pills, police said yesterday. The woman, who was not identified, was also caught with small quantities of other narcotics, police added, without giving further details. She was expected to face charges late yesterday. Education reforms Education Minister Marietta Giannakou said yesterday she is confident the government’s education reforms will be achieved despite strong opposition to the changes. The minister added that she is certain that the controversial changes will be pushed through successfully. Illegal immigrants The Merchant Marine Ministry said yesterday that coast guard officials had detained seven illegal immigrants on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos. The immigrants, detained in two separate groups, had crossed over into Greece from Turkey, the ministry add. No information was given regarding their identity. Man murdered An 80-year-old man was found murdered in his home on the island of Salamina, close to Athens, with multiple head wounds, police said yesterday. Authorities believe the victim, Haralambos Kapatzoglou, was killed by a neighbor who suffers from mental illness. The motives behind the attack were not clear. Hunter arrested A 35-year-old hunter was arrested in Thessaloniki for allegedly shooting at a fellow hunter in order to scare him away from his hunting grounds, police said yesterday. Authorities said that the suspect shot at a 62-year-old man after they had argued over who had the right to hunt in that area. No one was injured in the incident, according to police.
