An opportunity for Israel
Iran’s failed missile attack against Israel offers the latter an opportunity to reverse the negative environment on the public relations front.
At an operational level, both its own deterrent capabilities and its network of international partnerships with countries such as the United States, Britain and France, as well as neighbors such as Jordan, made it possible to shoot down almost all incoming Iranian drones and missiles.
On the diplomatic front, Iran’s attack in a way has changed the international equation. From being seen as the aggressor in the last six months, as it reacted to the last October’s terrorist attack by Hamas, and being harshly criticized by some countries and strongly encouraged by its allies, including the US, to accept a ceasefire, it is now in the position of the victim.
Just because it managed to withstand Iran’s attack, this doesn’t diminish the fact that it was attacked. Its reaction simply confirmed its technological superiority in the field.
Everyone – friends and foes alike – recognizes Israel’s military ability to deal heavy blows to Iran.
Given the fact that its power and capability to strike back is not questioned, a unique opportunity arises for Israel. By showing restraint, it can change the international environment it faces, which, no matter how one sees it, is not very friendly.
However, in the last 24 hours, it has become clear that the Israeli government has decided to retaliate against Iran.
As a result, friends and allies have expressed hope that the response will be very limited and carried out in a way that will minimize further escalation and the risk of a worsening regional and global situation with incalculable consequences for all.
