Commemoration of Athens Polytechnic uprising begins
A woman lays a flower at a memorial for the bloody November 17, 1973 student uprising against the military dictatorship at the historic site of the Athens Polytechnic, on Wednesday. The anniversary of the revolt on Thursday will be marked with a large protest rally in front of Parliament in central Athens and the customary march to the US Embassy in protest at America’s support for the colonels’ regime. The police are mounting a massive security operation in the city center, as the occasion is often marred by clashes and riots. Measures include street and metro station closures in and around the downtown area. [Giorgos Vitsaras/AMNA]
