Acquittal recommended for ex-minister, prosecutor

A special court prosecutor has recommended the acquittal of former corruption prosecutor Eleni Touloupaki and ex-minister Dimitris Papangelopoulos of the charges of abuse of power, arguing there was no evidence.

The charge against Touloupaki concerned failure to send to Parliament reports submitted by the KINAL party on two former health ministers under the SYRIZA government, Panagiotis Kouroumplis and Andreas Xanthos, on medicine pricing.

The prosecutor said the omission attributed to Touloupaki is not substantiated, so she proposed her acquittal, but also Papangelopoulos’, who is on trial for instigating Touloupaki’s abuse of power.

“I propose the acquittal of both, Eleni Touloupaki for the offense of abuse of power and Dimitris Papangelopoulos for instigating the same offense,” said prosecutor Olga Smyrli, adding that if the charge was misconduct in office, she would still recommend acquittals for both.
