Seven police officers removed from posts over deadly fan brawl

Seven police officers, including the head of the sub-directorate for violence in sports grounds, have been removed from their posts over the deadly clashes between rival soccer fans that took place in Athens late on Monday, Citizen Protection Minister Giannis Oikonomou said on Tuesday.

The other six officers who are being transferred to lesser posts are from Traffic Police departments along the path of the motorcade that brought 100-120 Dinamo Zagreb hooligans to the Greek capital, where they clashed with fans of local club AEK. A man, identified as being 29 years old, died in the brawl after being stabbed multiple times.

“The removals and transfers, as a result of this specific incident, will not stop here,” Oikonomou said, as different investigations were launched into the incident itself and into the response of the authorities.
