Palaiopyrgos bridge in flooded region collapses

A road bridge in central Greece, an area that was hit by unprecedented levels of rain last week collapsed on Thursday, state-run broadcaster ERT reported.

The two-way bridge in eastern Thessaly links the villages of Palaiopyrgos with Alexandrini and the coastal villages near Tempe. With its collapse, access to Palaiopyrgos is done through Pyrgetos, further west.

The small bridge that was built in the 1980s and traffic had been blocked in the previous days, following the flooding caused by storm Daniel.
