New Democracy maintains solid lead, poll finds
Greece’s ruling conservatives maintain a solid lead over the leftist opposition party, as indicated by a new opinion poll conducted by Pulse and commissioned by Skai TV, released on Thursday.
Based on the projected results, factoring in the share of valid votes, New Democracy could expect to garner 38% if a general election were to be held today, while SYRIZA would secure half of that, at 19%.
The survey was conducted between September 25 and 27, following Stefanos Kasselakis’ election as SYRIZA’s new leader. In the general election in June, the party managed to collect only 17.8% of the vote.
According to the same poll, the center-left PASOK would receive 12%, followed by the communist KKE with 9%, the nationalist Greek Solution with 6%, and the neo-fascist Spartiates (Spartans) with 4%. The ultraconservative Niki (Victory) party and the leftist populist Course for Freedom would both attain 3%, which is the threshold for entering Parliament.
In the same survey, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis leads with the highest positive popularity rating, standing at 43%. Dimitris Koutsoumbas of the Greek Communist Party (KKE) closely follows with 39%, while Kasselakis and PASOK’s Nikos Androulakis hold 28%. Zoe Konstantopoulou, the Course for Freedom chief, trails closely behind at 27%.
A majority of citizens, comprising 51%, expressed the belief that the government is heading in the wrong direction during its initial 100 days in office, while 40% perceived it to be on the right path. Concerns also exist regarding the state’s response to natural disasters, with 54% feeling they are inadequately handled, in contrast to 39% who believe they are appropriately managed.
Lastly, 58% believe that the leadership change at SYRIZA will likely or certainly challenge the party’s unity.
