Greek National Broadcasting Council to issue guidelines on the protection of human rights

The National Broadcasting Council (ESR) had its first meeting on Monday after its change in leadership and is expected to present a set of guidelines to the media on the protection of human rights in view of broadcasted homophobic comments, as well as extreme scenes of violence.

The ESR arranged an emergency off-the-agenda plenary session, which dealt with homophobic comments from the radio and TV channel SKAI against the president of the main opposition party SYRIZA Stefanos Kasselakis. The legal department was instructed to proceed as required by law.

In the meantime, the ESR is expected to present recommendations to the media for compliance with the provisions on the protection of human rights, and the respect of individual personality, in the context of freedom of expression, after the incidents against Kasselakis. Moreover, recommendations will also concern the protection of childhood and innocence, after footage of violence that exceeded the purpose of information was reported from the war in the Gaza Strip.
