Mitsotakis after Odesa missile hit: ‘No one will intimidate us’

Kyriakos Mitsotakis issued a clear message of support for Ukraine n Thursday, a day after a Russian missile missed Ukraine’s president and the prime minister of Greece by hundreds of metres when it slammed into port infrastructure in the Black Sea city of Odesa.

“No one will intimidate us,” Mitsotakis said in a speech at the two-day conference of the European People’s Party (EPP) in Bucharest, Romania.

“I think we all have a message for the Kremlin: we will not be afraid, we will continue to support Ukraine and its brave citizens for as long as it takes. And we remain united on this issue,” he added.

He also said that the EU showed determination in supporting Ukraine with a united front. “Our enemies did not expect this. We support Ukraine financially and militarily, we impose sanctions on Russia.”

“We are sending a message that no violation of sovereign rights and international law will be accepted by the European family,” Mitsotakis added.

The attack reportedly took place at 11.45 a.m. when the Greek and Ukrainian delegations were on a tour of the historic port of Odesa. The meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Mitsotakis went ahead as planned, despite the explosion.

Five people were killed in the strike and more were wounded, but no injuries were reported among the two delegations.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council head Charles Michel condemned the attack in messages.
