Poll finds over three-quarters of Greeks believe in ongoing Tempe coverup

An Alco poll conducted on behalf of private broadcaster Alpha showed that citizens have lost faith in Tempe investigation, and that leftist SYRIZA fell behind socialist PASOK by one percentage point.

Over a year since the deadliest accident in Greek railway history, citizens believe that not only have safety measures not improved, but that there is an ongoing effort to cover up presumptive misdealings by guilty parties.

Specifically, 77% of respondents believe that not enough has been done to to rectify the mistakes that lead to the February 2023 accident, which left 57 dead and many with life-altering physical injuries and psychological trauma – 9% of respondents believe that what needed to be done has been done, while 14% did not answer.

Furthermore, 77% of respondents believe that there is an ongoing coverup effort, while 11% say that no politicians were responsible for the accident or involved in a coverup, while 12% did not answer.

On whether respondents had any trust or faith in the justice system’s ability to punish the guilty parties, 38% said not at all, 29% said only a little bit, 22% said quite a bit, 5% said very much, while 6% did not answer.

As to the state of the nation’s political parties, PASOK at 11.5% seems to have barely overtaken SYRIZA at 10.5%, while ruling New Democracy (ND) is showing increasing signs of weakness at 27% support.

With a 53.74% turnout in the June 2023 legislative election, ND had scored 40.79% of the vote, Syriza got 20.07%, and PASOK 11.46%.

Smaller parties also made slight gains, with communist KKE going up to 8.9% and religious-conservative Niki to 6.4%.

Asked whether they were satisfied with the government’s performance, 46% responded with not at all, 29% with very little, and 23% with quite a bit.

Regarding the SYRIZA conference and the performance given by its head, Stefanos Kasselakis, 47% of respondents believe that party was neither weakened nor strengthened by it, while 23% said it was weakened, 15% said it was strengthened, and 15% did not answer.

As to Kasselakis’ performance, 37% said that their negative opinion of him was not changed, 22% said that their opinion worsened, 16% said that it was as good as before, 7% said it had improved, and 18% did not answer.
