49 detainees await expedited trial following Thessaloniki University arrests

A coordinated police operation led to the arrest of 49 individuals on Saturday afternoon following reports of vandalism at Aristotle University in the northern port city of Thessaloniki. The arrested will remain in police custody for an expedited trial on Monday.

The detainees, 31 men and 18 women aged 19 to 30, were escorted under tight security. They face charges of obstruction of justice, with additional charges for failure to obey a lawful order, as 48 refused fingerprint examination.

Various items were seized, including wooden batons, masks and incendiary devices. A separate case was formed for violation of weapons and explosives laws.

Outside the courts, crowds gathered in solidarity with the detainees, chanting slogans.

Further investigation is underway by the Thessaloniki Police Directorate.
