Two taxi drivers caught after pharmacy robberies

Two taxi drivers were behind three armed robberies on Athens pharmacies on Friday morning, which led to them trading fire with the police and, finally, their arrest.

The suspects, aged 42 and 44, were not named but officers said they held up pharmacies in Neos Cosmos, Ymittos and Vyronas before the taxi they were using was spotted by police. The robbers exchanged a total of 10 shots with police.

One of the bullets lodged itself in the protective vest of a member of the motorcycle-riding DIAS squad.

Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias congratulated the officers after the suspects were arrested without further incident (photo).

The 42-year-old had been arrested in the past for illegally carrying a weapon.
