Dendias vows more action following Athens sweep
Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias on Monday announced that a police crackdown on crime in central Athens will be intensified, following the arrest on Sunday of 41 people in the run-down districts of Omonia and Aghios Panteleimonas.
Dendias met with Public Order General Secretary Thanasis Andreoulakos and Police Chief Nikos Papayiannopoulos in a bid to find ways to improve public safety in downtown Athens.
The meeting came after some 150 police officers were dispatched to the streets of Athens on Sunday, detaining 330 people, of whom 41 were arrested. The majority of those arrested were immigrants who failed to display legal documentation.
