Ministers and local authority chief to discuss mobility scheme

As speculation mounts that the second round of the so-called mobility scheme will draw on local authority staff, Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis (photo) and Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis are to meet on Thursday with the head of the Confederation of Greek Municipalities, Costas Askounis, to discuss the matter.

The talks are expected to be tense following press reports claiming that thousands of local authority staff are to be among the 12,500 civil servants to join a second round of forced transfers and layoffs.

The City of Athens called for an official clarification. “If this is not a strategy to intentionally release information, the Interior Ministry must refute it,” it said in a statement, expressing concerns about the apparent “drafting of ‘sudden death’ scenarios for municipalities or their services.”

Ministry sources insisted that staff for the mobility scheme would not be culled from just one sector.
