Major cocaine shipment seized at Piraeus port

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) seized more than 350 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a coffee bean shipment from Guatemala at the port of Piraeus Thursday.

The cocaine was found inside 298 packages and is estimated to have a street value of around 10 million euros. No arrests had been by late Thursday.

According to ELAS, the drugs were found during a large-scale search operation of containers originating from South America, at Piraeus on July 12-19, by the relevant police and port authorities, with the cooperation of the Drug Enforcement Administration office of the US Embassy.

“The purpose… was to locate and seize quantities of cocaine, which may have been hidden in consignments of legal goods, in order to prevent their diffusion in the European drug market,” the statement said, adding that Greek law enforcement is cooperating with authorities abroad to identify and arrest the the smugglers.
