New bill brings quicker trials, tougher sentences

The government is attempting to make broad changes to the criminal sanctions system and the conduct of criminal trials in a bill currently under public consultation.

The bill, which has five pillars, follows the failed change to the criminal codes before the 2019 elections and the interim partial improvements to key provisions.

The aim, as Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis notes, is “to combat the impunity that pervades society and the need for the state to finally look at the side of the victims in an effort to balance our legislative options.”

Among the sweeping provision of the bill, which is expected to be voted on after the holidays, is the speeding up of criminal trials for serious offenses.

It also foresees jail sentences for arsonists, community service for minor offenses, while only one adjournment will be allowed by the courts.
