Health Ministry seeks to entrench personal doctors
Determined to entrench the institution of personal doctors, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced changes on Wednesday, in line with the standards set by other European countries and the World Health Organization.
More specifically, the ministry is launching an enticing monetary bonus of 30,000 euros per year for as many years as the specialist training of aspiring doctors lasts (so far 5 years), with the commitment that budding pathologists will remain an equal number of years in the National Health System (ESY).
“If we don’t do something immediately, we will run out of doctors,” Georgiadis stressed.
“I legislated the personal doctor in 2014 and it began to be implemented in 2022. Today, 2,215 public doctors and 1,272 private doctors have participated in the system, while approximately 56% of the eligible population has registered… a small revolution, if you consider that for eight years we were at 0%,” the minister added.
