Some 45,000 elite athletes and running enthusiasts will be descending on the Greek capital this weekend for the 39th edition of the Athens Marathon, as well as shorter races, taking place on Sunday.
Traffic police gradually began cordoning off main roads across Attica and the capital on Friday in view of this weekend’s 39th Athens Authentic Marathon as well as the 10- and 5-kilometer road races. Around 45,000 runners have registered for the various events.

The 38th Athens Authentic Marathon will be held on the weekend of November 13-14, and a press conference on the annual run will be held on Wednesday, November 10, organizers said.
The Athens Half Marathon, which is to be held on Sunday after a two-year hiatus, will from this year be dedicated to the memory of renowned composer Mikis Theodorakis, who died on September 2.
This year’s Athens Marathon, scheduled to take place on Nov. 7-8, has been canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, organizers said in a statement.
